How to reach the Cold Desert:By Air:Leh, the capital,was the nearest airport.By Rail:The nearest railhead from Leh Ladakh is Jammu, approximately 690 km
away.
By Road:The 434-km Srinagar-Leh road connects Ladakh to rest of the country.Places To Visit:Zanskar Valley:Zangskar valley lies to the south west of Leh, surrounded by the Himalayan and
Zangskar ranges, which is the most isolated of all the trans- Himalayan valleys.The area remains inaccessible for nearly
7 months in the year. All the high passes are close in the winter and the river
freeze on the surface.

Gompa of Ladakh is located at a distance of approximately 3 km from the
town of Leh.The monastery, a small under Gompa of Spitok, is staffed by twenty monks,
and is the official residence of the Kushok Bakul, Ladakh's head of the
Gelug-pa sect.

Alchi:67kms from Leh district,situated at the bank of Indus river. The village is famous for existence of one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, mainly known for its wall paintings of the 11th century.

Kargil:This area lies just behind the Zoji La Pass, and the center is Kargil, a small town with cobbled streets surrounded by apricot groves. Good panoramas of the Himalaya can be obtained on 3-4 day treks from Sanko to Drass via Umba.

Indus Valley:At an average elevation of 3500 m is sand-witched between the Zanskar Range on its South and the Ladakh Range on its North, This is the geographical backbone, and the historical heartland of Ladakh.
